Humans are ritual animals among many other animals. Ritual connects, comforts and possibly increases empathy and understanding of the world. It can be also activity that traverses more-than-human relations, and transforms along the changes for instance in environments, technologies and politics. Thus, what are the possibilities of artistic approaches to develop more-than-human ritualisations in the changes of the planetary polycrisis era? Can this kind of ritualisation, a seed of a ritual, foster well-being and ecocultural resilience, create awareness of more-than-human relations and propose ethical contexts to enmesh human concept within the nature-ecocultures?
The focus is on the changing conditions of palsa mires in the Circumpolar North, north Fennoscandia and especially the means of encountering the ancient microbes of the permafrost thaw who are unknown to the current ecosystems but released from their frozen state due to the climate warming. The research combines sensory ethnography and walking methodologies with ritualisation and emphasise intuitive knowing in the sentient ecologies. It facilitates the permafrost microbial encounter in the steam of sauna, an existing ritual that carries accumulating traditional ecological knowledge. Experiences of the human participants were colleted by observation and discussing. Through artistic practices and new materialist theoretical framework, the ritualisation unfolds as part of Arctic aesthetics; within the contexts of art, science, and geopolitics, as well as through corporeal permeability on micro and macro levels.
The research consists of three publications and an exhibition Walks in the Steams of Cryosphere (2024). The results of the research propose intuitive more-than-human communication as a method to acknowledge more-than-human agency and consciousness as a relation. The sensory study of environmental relations in the Arctic, carried out as walk-with, examined transformations in parallel with scientific observations. This approach connects various ways of knowing to embodied, entangled experience that corresponded to scientific findings on environmental change, while the ritualisation is a lens to the narratives of relational, plural values in practice. Walk-with was examined as ritualisation, as a communal experience and as an encounter with microbes thawing from the permafrost. The artistic component of the research, presented in the form of an exhibition, gathered the works as propositions, archived more-than-human ritualisation, and embedded artistic practices within an existing transcorporeal ritual—sauna bathing. It underlines how existing rituals are affected by the polycrisis changes and how artistic practises can pinnacle these changes within rituals to become-with the constantly transforming more-than-human world. Furthermore, the research provides a broad overview of art related to its subject area, such as Arctic art, art of walking , art as ritual, and art in the sauna.

Ihminen on rituaalinen eläin monien muiden eläinten tavoin. Rituaali yhdistää ja lohduttaa epävarmuudessa sekä mahdollisesti lisää empatiaa ja ymmärrystä maailmasta. Se voi olla myös toimintaa, joka läpileikkaa erilaisia suhteita ja muuttuu esimerkiksi ympäristöjen, teknologian ja politiikan muutoksen mukana. Mitkä ovat taiteellisten lähestymistapojen mahdollisuudet kehittää ihmistä laajempia ritualisointeja eko-sosiaalisen monikriisin aikakaudella? Voiko tällainen ritualisaatio, rituaalin verso, lisätä hyvinvointia ja ymmärrystä ihmisen ylittävästä, jaetusta suhteellisuudesta sekä ehdottaa kokeiluja eettisessä viitekehyksessä, jossa tunnistetaan ihmisyys kudottuna osaksi ekokulttuurisuutta?
Tutkimuksen painopiste on palsasoiden muuttuvissa olosuhteissa Pohjois-Fennoskandiassa: ilmastonmuutoksen vuoksi suon ikiroudasta sulavissa, ikivanhoissa mikrobeissa, jotka ovat tuntemattomia nykyisille ekosysteemeille, sekä niiden kohtaamisessa. Tutkimuksessa yhdistetään aistietnografiaa ja kävelymetodologiaa ritualisointiin käytännön intuition kautta sekä tuodaan ikijään mikrobit osaksi olemassaolevaa rituaalia, saunomista. Kokemuksellista aineistoa tutkimukseen kerättiin teoksiin osallistuvilta ihmisiltä havainnoiden ja keskustellen. Taiteen praktiikan ja uusmaterialismin painottuvan teoreettisen viitekehyksen pohjalta, ritualisaatio kehkeytyy osana arktista estetiikkaa; taiteen, tieteen, teknologian, geopolitiikan konteksteissa sekä kehollisena läpäisevyytenä mikro- ja makrotasoilla.
Tutkimus koostuu kolmesta julkaisusta, sekä näyttelystä ‘Walks in the Steams of Cryosphere’ (2024). Tutkimuksen tuloksensa ehdotetaan intuitiivista kommunikaatiota menetelmäksi ihmisen ylittävän toimijuuden ja tietoisuuden suhteellistamiseksi. Menetelmää hyödynnetään kanssakävelynä toteutetussa aistitutkimuksessa ympäristösuhteista ja niiden muutoksista Arktisella rinnakkain luonnontieteellisten havaintojen kanssa, avaten ekokulttuurisia arvoja. Kanssakävelyä tarkastellaan rituaalisaationa ja yhteisöllisenä kokemuksena ikiroudasta sulavien mikrobien kanssa. Näyttely kerää teokset ehdotuksina, arkistoi ihmisen ylittävää ritualisointia ja upottaa taiteen käytäntöjä olemassa olevaan keholliseen rituaaliin; saunomiseen. Tämä korostaa, miten monikriisin muutokset vaikuttavat rituaaliin ja miten taiteen praktiikka voi tuoda ne esiin. Tutkimus tarjoaa lisäksi laajan katsauksen aihepiiriinsä liittyvään taiteeseen kuten Arktinen taide ja taide rituaalina, kävelynä sekä saunassa.
